AmeriCorps VISTA- Community Outreach and Public Resources Coordinator- Charleston, WV

Are you interested in learning more about the legal profession, gaining practical work experience, and earning money for college or graduate school, all while changing the lives of individuals in your community?  Legal Aid of West Virginia has an AmeriCorps VISTA Member position located in our Charleston Office that offers exciting opportunities to help educate and empower low income West Virginians to advocate for their legal rights and increase access to justice.

The AmeriCorps VISTA Member working with Legal Aid will spend most of their time working to (1) develop online legal information videos for the public and (2) expand the availability of Legal Aid’s written legal information and self-help legal forms across the state. The VISTA member will hit the ground running by learning about all aspects of West Virginia’s civil legal system, including learning about the law and how it applies. The VISTA member will then create videos that will provide basic legal information to enable low income persons to better understand their legal rights and issues they may face if they go to court. These videos will be available on Legal Aid’s website and enable Legal Aid to develop a YouTube Channel. Further, the VISTA will update legal information Legal Aid currently has publicly available and add additional resources on common poverty law problems, like divorce, child custody, tenant rights, public benefits and consumer problems to our website. The VISTA will create an internal library where all of these resources are housed. The VISTA member will also get to perform outreach to community agencies across the state.

Service term is one year, beginning in July 2018. All positions are full time. Members are paid a living allowance and earn an Education Award. Benefits include health insurance. All members must sign a contract committing to one year of service.
