Toll-Free Telephone Number Scams - FTC Information
- Calls to 800 and 888 numbers are almost always free, but there are some exceptions. Companies that provide audio entertainment or information services may charge for calls to 800, 888 and other toll-free numbers, but only if they follow the Federal Trade Commission’s 900-Number Rule. Unauthorized Charges "Crammed" Onto Your Phone Bill - FTC Information
- Under the terms of a recent settlement involving unauthorized charges on telephone bills, some consumers may be eligible for a refund. The charges may have been for website design, voice mail, club memberships, hospital phone rental, other "enhanced" services, or 900 number services that were "crammed" onto phone bills.
