What About Me? The Impaired Nursing Home Resident's Right to Be Heard
- Many residents and families are using Medical Powers of Attorney and other "advance directives" to help assure that the resident's wishes about care are respected. But sometimes there is a tendency to quit asking the resident what she wants, if there is another person who has been authorized to make decisions under this kind of document. This article, by Suzanne Messenger, attorney with the Legal Aid of West Virginia Long Term Care Ombudsman Program, discusses how decision makers should continue to involve the resident in choices about their own care.
