Document Web site - US DHHS Office of Civil Rights - HIPAA information - "HIPAA" stands for the federal "Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996." This law protects the privacy of medical information, and has provisions addressing when an employee may continue their health insurance coverage even when changing jobs. This link is to the US Department of Health & Human Services, Office of Civil Rights, which is the federal agency charged to be the primary enforcer of HIPAA rights and protections. The site has lots of consumer information, as well as more technical information.
