Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP)
WRAP is a self management recovery system developed by individuals who have experienced the complications of life with mental health challenges. The purpose of the program is to help participants identify and develop individualized wellness tools. The individual then learns how he can use those tools to maintain a healthy lifestyle and, when necessary, use those individually identified approaches to control stressful symptoms and identify the best course of action to remain in control of his situation. WRAP also includes Crisis Planning to let others know how the individual would like for them to respond if he can no longer make decisions or keep himself safe. A Post Crisis Plan identifies tools to help the individual heal from the strain of the crisis.
The WRAP program is designed and managed by the participant! A WRAP helps to decrease or prevent intrusive or troubling feelings and improves the overall quality of the participant’s life. A WRAP can help an individual set and achieve healthy life goals.
The WRAP for youth program is new to West Virginia. It is our goal to help youth, ages 5 to 17, identify and build on their strengths to live well and stay well. The program is a great way to empower youth to discover and express what does and does not work for them. Finally, we have a means to bridge the gap between youth and the adults in their lives.
"This has changed my life completely. I used to think of myself as this "mentally ill" person. Now I am a person who knows how to take care of myself and help myself in difficult time. If I am feeling badly or having a hard time, I take action. And there are so many simple, safe things I can do."
