The IRS announced yesterday that "certain" people will have to submit information BY MAY 5th in order to get their $500 per child payments included with their $1,200 per adult electronic payments.
(1) did not file tax returns for either 2018 or 2019; AND
(2) get SSI or income from the Veteran’s Administration; AND
(3) have children in their household.
These people will receive their $1,200 per adult Stimulus Payment electronically and automatically, probably in early to mid- May but will not automatically receive any payment for their children.
If they want to have their $500 per child payment INCLUDED with the $1,200 payment, they have to submit information about the children before Tuesday, May 5, 2020. If they don't meet this deadline, they can't get the $500 per child payment until next year, and only if they file a tax return next year for 2020 income.
What do they have to do?
Go to www.irs.gov and click on "Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here." Follow the directions. Will need to provide names and social security numbers of all members of household, including children, along with mailing address and bank account information for direct deposit.
The May 5 deadline only applies to SSI and VA beneficiaries who need to let the IRS know they have dependents eligible for the $500. No action is necessary if you don’t need to register a dependent. Your stimulus payment will be automatically sent just as you would normally receive your benefits.
