UPCOMING DEADLINES: Economic Impact Payments for Children in Your Household

The IRS recently announced that "certain" people will have more time to submit information in order to get their $500 per child Economic Impact Payments in 2020, if they haven’t already gotten payments for children.

Who? : People who get Social Security Retirement, Social Security Disability, SSI, Railroad Retirement benefits or income from the Veteran’s Administration; AND did not file tax returns for either 2018 or 2019; AND have children in their household.

These people have likely already received their Economic Impact Payment, as an individual or couple.   But if they did not submit additional information to the IRS, they did not automatically receive any payment for their children.   If people in this group already submitted information about their children to the IRS website through the “Non-Filers” tool, they do not need to do anything.

Also, people who did not file tax returns for 2018 and 2019, may not have gotten any Economic Impact Payments yet, unless they have provided information to the IRS already.   If people in this group already submitted information to the IRS website through the “Non-Filers” tool, hopefully they already provided information about their children too.

What is the deadline?

People who get Social Security Retirement, Social Security Disability, SSI, Railroad Retirement benefits or income from the Veteran’s Administration and who didn’t file a tax return for 2018 or 2019 must provide information about children in their household by September 30, 2020 to get their Economic Impact Payment for children in 2020.   If they don't meet these deadlines, they can't get the $500 per child payment until next year, in 2021, and only if they file a tax return for 2020 income.

Also, people who did not file tax returns for either 2018 or 2019 must provide information about themselves and the children in their household by October 15, 2020 to get their Economic Impact Payment for themselves and their children in 2020.    If they don't meet these deadlines, they can't get the payment for themselves as an individual or couple, along with the $500 per child payment until next year, in 2021, and only if they file a tax return for 2020 income.

What do they have to do? : Go to https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/non-filers-enter-payment-info-here.  Scroll down the page and click on the button that says "Enter your information." Follow the directions.  You will need to provide names and social security numbers of all members of household, including children, along with mailing address and bank account information for direct deposit.
